Random but not by Chance

Random, but not by Chance 1, 2 had the goal of documenting the productions of the Festival for Performing Arts “Luoghi comuni” (Common Places) which included the participation of experimental and young theatre and dance companies from all around Lombardy. Barbara Fässler filmed all the performances of the festival and then produced a huge mass of very short video pieces she has treated with a colored filter. The short video pieces and a series of sounds by Gianluca Codeghini have been projected randomly, so that the result appeared like a finished and mounted film, although those pieces followed each other by an uncontrollable logic. This means that the film repeated itself continuously and randomly; arranging the order of the short video pieces by chance. The video projection ran during the opening of all the theatre and experimental spaces taking part in the festival.

Random, but not by Chance has been sustained by the Swiss Institute in Rome and by the association Ètre.
