Here & There

Migrants live in a no-man’s-land somewhere between Here & There, suspended between two realities, moving backwards and forwards between two cultural and linguistic codes so that meanings and references become blurred. Here & There features works by artists of various nationalities living in Switzerland and Italy. It examines the consequences of having a dual identity and the way this dualism is reflected in their art. Does the acquired culture live side by side with the culture of origin, or is the original culture gradually supplanted? Does moving to another country result in cultural shock and disorientation or does it stimulate vital energy and curiosity? Are the migrant’s roots weakened and shattered, or are they reinforced and multiplied? Do integration problems increase their existential suffering or do they make them better able to overcome other crises? Does
perpetually having to struggle to survive make them more perceptive and generate creative drive? Have their senses been refined by experiencing different political situations, making them capable of recognizing similar mechanisms and schemas in other contexts?
We have posed questions rather than making statements because in being open-ended such questions highlight the impossibility of a definitive answer. Living between Here & There raises an endless series of issues and stimulates a perpetual study of the nuances and pleats of living – of living Here & There.
