Noise & Silence

Noise & Silence are contrasting characteristics of sound and images. Artists are often more at ease with images, which causes them to question how sound can be expressed visually. When music invades contemporary art, the result is unique: the immateriality of sound joins the materiality of art and the audible rhythm unites with its visual counterpart. Noise & Silence plays on the ambiguity that hovers on the perimeters of perception, on the fringe between presence and absence. While most of us have the impression of being continuously bombarded by noise pollution, there also exists an opposing reality totally void of sound, noise and music – a reality of silence, where communicating with the world of sound is made even more difficult when the sound-filled world is governed by languages with differing instruments and rules. Noise & Silence is a theme for one of the senses, which we tend to forget and that we often become aware of precisely when it is absent.

Rumore & silenzio

Rumore & silenzio sono due caratteristiche contras­tanti del suono e delle immagini. Gli artisti, spesso più a loro agio con quest’ultime, si chiedono come il suono possa essere espresso visi­vamente. Quando la musica irrompe nel campo dell’arte contemporanea avviene un incontro particolare:
l’immaterialità del suono si avvicina alla materialità dell’arte, il ritmo udibile si unisce a quello visibile. “Rumore & silenzio” gioca con l’ambiguità che nasce ai limi­ti della perce­zione, nella fascia di confine tra presenza e assenza. Mentre per la maggior parte degli esseri umani la continua sovra­esposizione all’inqui­namento sonoro sembra non cessare mai, esiste una realtà drasticamente contraria: quella della totale assenza di suoni, rumori, musica. Una realtà del silenzio, dalla quale la comunicazione con il mondo dei rumori è tanto più difficile quanto più vi regnano linguaggi con strumenti e regole differenti. “Rumore & silenzio” tematizza un senso umano che tendiamo a dimenticare e del quale prendiamo più facilmente consapevolezza proprio quando viene a mancare.
